Stardust / The Mission (double bill)
In these two tales about love, music and war
Stardust is the story of esteemed Victorian jazz musician, Col Brain and his wooden dresser – which sat unopened for over 25 years in the family garage of his grandson – the multi-award winning ABC presenter and musician, Joel Carnegie.
As a once prized possession, the dresser hadn’t been opened since Col had died. So what was inside? Originally commissioned as a radio documentary for ABC RN, this one-man show won “Best Performance By An Actor” (Joel Carnegie) and “Best Innovation” at the 2017 New York Festivals International Radio Awards. Creator and Performer, Joel Carnegie describes the show as a quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about life, through the things he left behind.
“Col Brain was an incredibly respected musician and teacher across Victoria and he left a legacy in the music he played, the students he taught, the family he loved and in me – so the show will be full of jazz standards and songs from Col’s era,” he said.
“Col’s story has been sitting patiently in a locked wooden dresser for over 25 years, as a time capsule of treasured memories – it’s time for his story to be finally told.”
The other show in this double bill is The Mission – and like Stardust, this is a tale that delves into family history - uncovering lingering memories and lessons from the past.
“The Mission tells the story of my great, great uncle, Alan McDonald,” said the show’s award-winning actor Tom Molyneux (The Nose; The Ministry).
“He was a ‘Fighting Gunditjmara’ man from South-West Victoria, and one of Victoria’s first Indigenous soldiers to enlist for war. Unlike Col Brain who worked on the homefront during the war, Alan McDonald fought abroad, including at Gallipoli and the Battle of Beersheba,” he said.
Directed by award winning director James Jackson (The Nose) and created in collaboration with Gunditjmara elders and community members, The Mission brings the words of the Gunditjmara people on stage, in a one-man show that traces the account of a soldier at war, both at home and abroad.
“Despite suffering extreme racism on his return to Australia – Alan fought for the rights of his Indigenous community. This is a story about not giving up on what you believe in, and fighting for justice, whatever the cost.”
Stardust and The Mission will uncover the extraordinary tales of ordinary Australians whose legacies still reverberate today.
